Federation University Australia is the result of an exciting collaboration between the University of Ballarat and Monash University’s Gippsland Campus. Headquartered in Ballarat, Victoria, FedUni offers Higher Education and TAFE programs for 23,000 students through 7 campuses ranging from Horsham in the west of the state to Churchill in the east.

Sustainability Achievements

The University is currently negotiating an Energy Performance Contract with Siemens to install $7 million of energy saving infrastructure aimed at reducing utility costs and environmental impact. New plant includes a co-generation system producing electricity from natural gas, large scale solar, 9,000 replacement light fittings, variable speed drives on motors and pumps, water sub-metering system, new gas boilers and air conditioners. As part of the EPC, Siemens have guaranteed a 49% reduction in energy costs, a 41% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 6 year return on investment.

From an operational sustainability perspective, the University has achieved the following in the past 5 years:

  • 15% reduction in energy consumption per m2 GFA
  • 13% reduction in gross GHG emissions (a considerable achievement considering floor space has increased by 15%)
  • A new staff waste and recycling program has increased recycling by 40% in the past year. Their traditional rubbish bin was replaced with a small desktop bin and recycling box. Staff are now required to empty their own personal waste into the nearest waste station leaving cleaning staff to empty the waste stations.
  • Fuel consumption has fallen by 25%. Savings are attributed to 92% of the vehicle fleet being 4 cylinder and 50% of the passenger fleet are diesel powered.
  • Paper consumption has fallen by 50% (or 17,000 reams). Stacked up, the paper savings would be taller than the highest building in the world at 850 metres.
  • Installation of outdoor filtered water stations. Past 9 months have seen students consume over 15,000 litres of water through the stations.
  • Construction of two new buildings that offer significantly improved efficiency and thermal performance. MTTC building has the equivalent of 2 olympic sized swimming pools underneath the building. The heated or cooled water flows through the slab floor providing efficient occupant comfort.
