Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS) is delighted to announce the launch of the Learning in Future Environments (LiFE) Index.
Developed with colleagues from across the sector in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, ACTS is proud to announce the launch of the LiFE Index to all Australasian institutions. Led by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) and launched in the UK in November 2011, ACTS in partnership, have created a bespoke version especially for the Australasian sector.
About the LiFE tool
The LiFE Index is an online software system that has been designed to support universities, TAFEs and polytechnics to demonstrate, recognise and reward their response to environmental and social sustainability.
The LiFE Index is a comprehensive and holistic system, flexible enough for each institution to tailor to their specific needs, incorporating their own approach and initiatives. The system offers an opportunity for institutions to demonstrate real value from their activities, by gathering pockets of good practice that are already taking place and bringing them together as a cohesive whole, for maximum impact and benefit.
The online performance management and improvement system features multi-user access, communication and management tools and improvement resources for institutions to manage every aspect of their sustainability agenda. The system works within 4 priority areas and is underpinned by a number of developmental frameworks that institutions can use to strategically manage, measure and improve their progress towards sustainability. In other words, the design of the system allows institutions to understand where they are, where they are going, and what gaps exist in between.
Benefits for your institution
One of the biggest benefits is that this tool has been designed by the sector – for the sector! A large number of individuals have been involved in the development of the Index so the system reflects not only the specific nature of the further and higher education sector but also the uniqueness of each institution, their context and their individual approaches to embedding sustainability.
Another benefit is that accreditation and benchmarking occurs at an international level. As the tool has been launched and utilised in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, this provides institutions interested in accreditation an opportunity to benchmark and see how they measure up against tertiary education institutions from across the globe.
Also you won’t be alone on your journey, as the tool has been designed with a support package available to each institution. The package is underpinned by face to face and online webinars, which will take place throughout the year, as well as a dedicated LiFE team to help answer all your questions. The next set of information sessions will take place during April & May 2012 and we will keep you posted of these events when they become available.
Who has already signed up?
Macquarie University and Holmesglen TAFE have been the first two institutions to sign up to the LiFE Index prior to the official launch!
“Understanding how sustainability is embedded holistically across our institution is extremely important to us. We have been supportive of the development process for LiFE and look forward to an international benchmarking system. I hope others within the sector will see the benefit this comprehensive performance improvement and management system can provide.” Belinda Bean – Sustainability Officer, Macquarie University.
Also since launching the Index in the UK – 15 institutions have signed up to take part in the scheme and we envisage this number to continue to grow across the globe!
