The International Green Gown Awards recognise exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by tertiary education institutions around the world. The Awards cover all aspects of campus life – from their teaching and research, leadership, facilities & service, to how students can benefit from the quality of life in the communities around them.
The Green Gown Awards are delivered on a regional basis in many countries: UK & Ireland, Australasia, French speaking-Europe and Canada and in 2016 the United Nations Environment Program (GUPES) delivered in six countries: Africa; Asia and the Pacific; Europe; Latin America and the Caribbean; North America and West Asia. Launched in 2012 between Australasia and UK, French-speaking Europe joined in 2014 and GUPES in 2016. The winners from each country compete for the coveted international title in three categories:
- Continuous Improvement: Institutional Change
- Student Engagement
Announcing the winners…the winners are announced in different locations each year:
2012 – Birmingham, UK
2013 – Derby, UK
2014 – Hobart, Australia
2015 – Bristol, UK
2016 – Lancaster, UK
2017 – Marseille, France (to be announced 16 May 2018
Important: No separate application is needed for the international Awards, entry is automatic via the regional scheme. Applications will be judged as a whole but the deciding factor will be on their engagement and dissemination activities and thus their scale of impact. A panel of international independent judges is convened for this task.
Our International Partners
The Green Gown Awards were brought to Australasia in 2010 and are open to all tertiary education institutions in Australia and New Zealand. The Awards are managed by ACTS and governed by a cross sector steering group. ACTS hosted the first international Awards ceremony outside of the UK in November 2014 at the hotel grand chancellor in Hobart.
The Green Gown Awards were founded in the UK in 2004 and have gone from strength to strength. They now have an unprecedented agreement with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
which will put the prestigious Green Gown Awards on a truly global audience.
The ethos of the Green Gown Awards is to ensure the lessons and example of good practice are shared and this exciting partnership will put UK universities and colleges as leaders in sustainability as well as being able to continue their learning from global leaders. The UK Green Gown Awards are administered by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) and are governed by a cross agency steering group. The International Green Gown Awards are also administered by the EAUC.
Les trophées des campus responsables are the French speaking edition of the Green Gown Awards. The Awards are open to all French speaking universities and colleges, schools and specialised institutes in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Canada.
The French speaking Green Gown Awards are being delivered by our partners, Campus Responsables
. The Campus Responsables ‘initiative’ was created in 2006 to encourage and assist integration of sustainable development into educational institutions programs and the management of their infrastructure.
Campus Responsables is the first network of universities and colleges focussing on sustainable development, with 40 member initiative institutions throughout France and Belgium. Campus Responsables are also working with our partners at UNICA
as part of their UGAF (UNICA Green Academic Footprint)
initiative. UNICA is a network of 46 universities from 35 capital cities of Europe, with a combined strength of over 150,000 staff and 1,800,000 students.
