SEPTEMBER 2021 EDITION
Green Campus Day 2021 banner
GREEN CAMPUS DAY IS NEARLY HERE
There's still time to join the celebration!

Held during World Green Building Week, ACTS celebrates Green Campus Day by providing the opportunity for members to showcase the buildings and other innovative features that make our campuses sustainable.

Institutions across Australia and New Zealand are invited to host an event on Tuesday 21 September 2021 with the aim of featuring sustainable infrastructure on campus.

In consideration of ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we continue to encourage online events, such as virtual tours, live-streams, webinars and pre-recorded video content that can be featured as part of Green Campus Day. Institutions that are able to safely host onsite events are of course also welcome too.

Green Campus Day events and content can be freely accessed by staff, students, industry representatives and the community - all the more reason to get involved and see first hand what sustainable campuses look like!

If your institution would like to participate, please contact us with the details of your event, recording or virtual tour.

Over a thousand universities worldwide use the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) to help guide and share their sustainability activities. It is highly regarded as a versatile tool that encompasses long-term sustainability goals for already high-achieving institutions, as well as entry points of recognition for institutions that are taking first steps toward sustainability.

Yet within the Australasian region, STARS is still a relatively new tool. Just three institutions have submitted for a rating to date, albeit with a growing cohort of institutions now preparing their data and submissions.

If you would like to learn more about STARS and how it can support your institution’s sustainability journey, then you’re invited to join this webinar. Meet the leaders that were instrumental to their institutions becoming the first in Australasia to achieve a STARS rating.

Our speakers will share exactly what’s involved – the good, the bad and the challenging! Hear first-hand about their experiences with using STARS to measure and improve sustainability performance, as well as utilise the entire process to engage with the campus community to celebrate best practice, while targeting action in areas where there’s more work to be done.

Speakers:
  • Corey Peterson, University of Tasmania
  • Carmen Primo Perez, University of Tasmania
  • Suzanne Davis, University of Queensland
  • Zoe Morrison, The University of Sydney

ANNOUNCING OUR NEW PARTNERSHIP
We are pleased to announce a new partnership between ACTS and the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA).

Many of our members will know GBCA as Australia's authority on sustainable buildings and communities, with a vision is to create healthy, resilient and positive places.

The signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between ACTS and GBCA establishes an agreement to collaborate in our shared interest of advancing progress towards sustainable development, and promoting sustainability awareness, education and knowledge.

We look forward to working with GBCA and sharing exciting opportunities for our members through the partnership!

SDSN AusNZPac, in collaboration with ACTS and other partners, are excited to be hosting a workshop for students called ‘The Climate Crisis and Universities: Capturing the student perspective’, organised by the new SDSN Youth AusNZPac Coordinator.

We are inviting university students from across our region who have a curiosity or passion about addressing climate change to come and be inspired, share, connect, learn, and collaborate. The aim of this workshop is to create a student position statement that captures the perspective of students on the role of universities in the climate crisis.

SDSN Youth AusNZPac is also looking for student speakers to be part of this event. If you know of any really great student-led climate initiatives at your institution who may be interested in sharing their work, or would like more information about the event, please contact Izzy (SDSN AusNZPac Youth Coordinator).

Please share this event with students from your own institution to increase the diversity of the student perspective.

The Tertiary Education Management Conference is organised in partnership by the Association for Tertiary Education Management (ATEM) and the Tertiary Education Facilities Management Association (TEFMA).

The event covers the full range of functions in institutions, and is designed to allow participants to build strong networks across Australia and New Zealand.

TEMC has a strong practitioner focus to support the sharing of knowledge and ‘know how’, and also provides opportunities to focus on big-picture issues as well. It allows participants to reflect on their management practice in a regional, national and global context.
