MARCH 2021 EDITION
MEMBER ROUNDTABLES: WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO YOU?
ACTS Member Roundtables are a fantastic opportunity for members to connect in an informal virtual setting to share ideas, challenges and practical solutions with colleagues from across the ACTS network.

Kicking off in April, each month a roundtable will be dedicated to a specific topic. Each meeting will be limited to a small number of active participants, allowing everyone the opportunity to share experiences, ask questions and contribute to general discussions. If there is demand to do so, we will also provide the opportunity for members to join as listen-only participants.

Members are now invited to help us create a priority list of roundtable themes by selecting your number one area of interest from the list below. Based off your feedback a schedule of roundtable events will be published in the next edition of enACT.

WE'RE CHANGING ACTS MEMBERSHIP PERIODS
In order to streamline our membership administration process, the ACTS team will be transitioning from the current date of sign-up/renewal period to a consistent calendar year period for all of our membership categories.

Simply put, this means that all memberships from 2022 onwards will cover the full calendar year, regardless of when renewal dues are invoiced and/or paid. This change will not just simplify administration for our team, but will also provide more consistency for members to account for annual membership dues as part of budget planning.

We will be using the reminder of 2021 to transition all existing members to the new membership period, which will now be renewed in November each year. Memberships that are due for renewal between now and November will be invoiced for a prorated amount, ensuring that existing members do not pay any additional fees during this transitional period.

If you have any questions regarding these changes and what it means for your ACTS membership, please get in touch with our team.

SURVEY: HE DISRUPTION & RESILIENCE FOR COVID-19
The ProSPER.Net Joint Research Project 'Disaster Education for Integrating SFDRR and SDG in Asia' designed an online survey questionnaire in order to understand the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as coping mechanisms and adaptation of Higher Education institutions.

The initial survey was deployed in 2020 as a joint initiative between ProSPER.Net and International Association of Universities (IAU). ACTS has now partnered with ProSPER.Net to deploy an adapted version of the survey for institutions in the Australasian region.

ACTS members are now invited to complete the survey, which is expected to take 10-15 minutes to complete. Responses are anonymous and the aggregate data will be shared with ProSPER.Net for the purposes of supporting the global education sector.

SOS' STUDENTS, SUSTAINABILITY AND EDUCATION RESEARCH: NOW PUBLISHED

Between April and October 2020, SOS International invited higher education institutions and student organisations to send out a survey designed to gather insight into student experiences of sustainability and education.

More than 100 organisations took part and SOS received just under 7000 responses from students in higher education around the world. Responses were incentivised with a prize draw of the equivalent of ten €100 prizes.

The final report sets out the overall findings as well as regional breakdowns for UN regions which received 500 responses or more (Africa, Europe and Oceania), with questions forming the following themes:

  • Experiences of sustainability in education
  • Impacts of sustainability in education
  • Sustainability and employability
  • Climate change

REMEMBERING NICK SWAN
The ACTS team is extremely saddened to share the news of the recent passing of Nick Swan. As Facilities Supervisor and coordinator of the Furniture and Equipment Reuse Centre at the University of Melbourne, Nick was a committed advocate for sustainability and an inspiration to so many with his vibrancy, zest for getting things done and commitment to making the world a better place.

Nick led Melbourne's Reuse Centre to become a world-leading program in circular economy practice, and was known throughout our network for his pioneering work in furniture reuse. He was recognised for his achievements by the ACTS Award of Excellence - Staff in the 2017 Green Gown Awards, and will be remembered by many of our members as a friendly and passionate presenter at a number of ACTS Conferences.

Our sincerest condolences go out to Nick's wife and daughters, his family and to his many friends and colleagues at the University of Melbourne.

Throughout the year the ACT team will be delivering a range of sustainability themed “acts” – be they engagement events, activities, shared learning opportunities or competitions – aimed at connecting a community of passionate individuals who want to learn more about sustainability and find out what they can do to help make the world a better place!

All staff and students of participating organisations can freely join any of our #actsofconnection activities. Check out our website today to learn more about this new engagement program and how your organisation can get access to it!
